Spotlight Project
Background & Challenge
Kingstand Farm, a biofuel supplier in Derbyshire, sought a renewable energy solution to support its energy-intensive operations, specifically drying biological materials. Due to constraints from the National Grid, the farm could only export a limited amount of energy.
Solution & Results
Grid Neutral designed a tailored farm solar PV system to maximise the energy benefits and follow National Grid constraints.
We maxed out the system to 65kW worth of solar panels to get the most out of what we could install.
This approach allowed Kingstand Farm to get as much benefit as possible from their system.
Despite the limitations on export and inverter capacity, the 65kW array maximises energy generation, leading to substantial reductions in energy costs.
Kingstand Farm now enjoys a more sustainable and cost-effective operation, with the renewable energy system supporting their drying processes efficiently.
FARM SOLAR PANELS FAQ
-
There isn’t one specific panel that works for every project, but we recommend looking for a reputable manufacturer with a good warranty (ideally at least 25 years). Our favourites are Q-Cells and Eurener, but we also offer other brands on request.
-
Yes you can. You can install it onto any building that is structurally suitable for Solar, such as barns. You can also ground mount them on any farmland that you have spare.
-
You will need planning permission for a ground mount array, and perhaps on an agricultural building if it is listed or in a conservation area. If this isn’t the case, you won’t need planning for panels on buildings as it falls under permitted development.
-
Solar panels typically require little maintenance, dirt will wash off whenever it rains. Birds may mess on the panels, which may warrant cleaning. A typical maintenance plan for a Solar system is once every 1-2 years, in which we’d test the electrical equipment to make sure it’s working, and also inspect the panels to see if they need cleaning or replacing.
