Background & Challenge

We recently finished a solar panel installation in Sheffield, for a returning customer who had already had a great experience with us at their previous home. They wanted to cut their electricity bills and power as much of the home as possible with solar energy. With roof space facing both south east and south west, the main challenge was designing a system that worked well throughout the day.

Solution & Results

We installed nine Jinko 440W all-black panels, a GivEnergy 3.6kW hybrid inverter, and a 9.5kWh GivEnergy battery. The system produces about 3,199 kWh a year, which covers most of the home’s 3,500 kWh annual use.

Roughly 60% of the household’s electricity now comes from solar and battery power. The system runs quietly, looks clean, and gives the homeowner more control over their energy use. It's a solid setup that works well for this Sheffield home.

  • Certainly so! Provided that your roof is suitable (in a state of good repair and facing an ideal direction), then it is a worthwhile investment.

A well designed system of solar panels plus a battery covers approximately 60% of the electricity demand of the average UK household. For some houses this can go up to 80-90% with good energy habits. It’s worth keeping in mind that it’s not an instant payback, the average payback period is around 8-10 years for the average system.

But, you can offset the majority of your electricity requirements, sell excess electricity to the grid, and use the battery to charge cheaply overnight to use during the day.

  • Solar panels work by using sunlight to generate electricity.

Panels are made up of a series of photovoltaic cells, that, when are hit by sunlight, generate a current which then allows for electricity to pass through the array, into the inverter (which changes it from DC to AC), and then into your home.

  • Typical warranties for Solar panels are around 25 years and are the ones we typically offer.

Although, we’ve found that as long as they are well-maintained, they can last much longer. We’d say up to 40 years for some systems!

  • Typically, around 1000kWh a year per kW of panels. So, a 4kW system (10 panels) would generate approximately 4000kWh a year. This can vary from house to house.

  • The electricity from the array will travel to the inverter via a DC (direct current) cable.

This then feeds the inverter that then changes it to AC (alternating current) which is what the houses electricity appliances will work with.

The inverter can also divert any excess to a battery system if present.

  • It has taken a long time for the market to cotton-on, but yes – adding solar panels do now have a positive effect on the value of your home. Allied to the gain in energy savings, the increase in your homes Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating also adds to a home’s desirability – you can usually expect to move up a band on your EPC certificate after the installation of solar panels.

Additionally, a quality solar panel and battery storage installation can make your property stand out in a competitive market.
